This moving solo is perfect for the memorial service of a vocal musician. Written
for the late Lynette Erwin Waller, the piece includes musical references
juxtaposed with phases of life. The somber middle section resolves to a hopeful
recap of the theme.
Text
There was a song that only she could sing.
And when we heard it, we knew how much we needed it.
Familiar notes, familiar words that we had heard before,
But when she sang it, we heard the truth,
And rose to follow.
She sang of hope, equality, and love.
And gave appreciation for acts of kindness.
Familiar notes, familiar words that we had heard before,
But when she sang it, we heard the truth,
And rose to follow.
Within a handful of measures,
The joy turned to sorrow,
And laughter let the tears dry.
But she knew the capacity of her range.
And through this beautiful aria,
She exposed her heart, her lovely heart.
We can’t replace the music, but we can remember it,
And sing along. Won’t you sing along?
